The Signs

Lush green fields with bright yellow flowers, majestic mountains with sparkling white snow-caps, tall trees as if touching the skies… beauty everywhere to be seen! Even as everything begins to die on the onset of winter, fall leaves look like bouquets of red, orange and yellow – an attraction and charm that no one can resist.

The variety in nature is something everyone enjoys and appreciates. People visit hill stations and beaches, country sides and deserts to see the wondrous display of beauty on earth. Few of us see these forms of nature and their uniqueness with an eye of wisdom and to learn something from it. If we look around in nature and see the trees, the plants, the plain soil, the sky, the moon, the sun, the stars and countless other forms we have something great to ponder upon and learn from.

Think of a tree. It is unique in itself. It is designed to be deep rooted to stand firm with a hard trunk and to bear delicate leaves and beneficial fruits. It is doing its job perfectly. Does any one of us assist it in taking water, air or nutrients from the earth and grow properly? No. It is doing its job and it is doing it well.

Allah tells us in the Noble Quran in Surah Al An’aam:

And it is He who sends down rain from the sky, and We produce thereby the growth of all things. We produce from it greenery from which We produce grains arranged in layers. And from the palm trees – of its emerging fruit are clusters hanging low. And [We produce] gardens of grapevines and olives and pomegranates, similar yet varied. Look at [each of] its fruit when it yields and [at] its ripening. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe. (Al Qur’an; Chapter 6: Verse 99)

And in Surah Ar Ra’d 4 Allah says:

And within the land are neighboring plots and gardens of grapevines and crops and palm trees, [growing] several from a root or otherwise, watered with one water; but We make some of them exceed others in [quality of] fruit. Indeed in that are signs for a people who reason. (Al Qur’an; Chapter 13: Verse 4)

Let us think about some of the other things in nature which are doing their unique work so diligently and consistently.

Look at the sun. It comes out on time and sets on time. It is designed to provide us with the light and heat that all living things on this planet require. The same is true of the stars, the night, the rain, the clouds…and so on.

What is amazing about all these forms of nature is that they are unique and so different from one other. They are doing their particular jobs without hindering the others and they have their distinct existence and presence. The thing to learn from this is that each and every creation on this planet is unique and it is designed to perform a unique function and it is equipped with the skills to carry out the same.

In Surah Yunus, Allah says:

It is He who made the sun a shining light and the moon a derived light and determined for it phases – that you may know the number of years and account [of time]. Allah has not created this except in truth. He details the signs for a people who know. (Al Qur’an; Chapter 10: Verse 5)

Now, let’s take a moment to think of our own personalities. Are we not much the same as these different forms of nature? We too are created beings and have our distinct personalities, endowed with uniqueness and specialties of our own. We too are not created without any purpose or just to exist and do nothing notable or useful. The need here is to ponder on the various signs in nature and see how wondrously they are doing their duties and how amazingly distinct they are!

As human beings, the best creation of Allah, we too have amazing abilities and talents that we can use in the way of Allah to benefit the fellow beings. Whatever qualities we have, are there in us to utilize for productive work and to carry out our duties in the best way.

If we look at the following sign from Suratul Baqarah:

And of the people is he who sells himself, seeking means to the approval of Allah. And Allah is kind to [His] servants. (Al Qur’an; Chapter 2: Verse 207)

We come to realize that the only path the creation of Allah is supposed to pursue is seeking His Pleasure. The human being is made in such a way that his spirit has this yearning, this thirst to achieve peace and total pleasure and this can be earned only through pleasing the One who is its Maker.

Allah invites His servants to ponder on the signs of nature and the signs of His Book to draw lessons and to improve and better our lives.

Pondering and using our intellect to understand the greatness of Allah’s creation plan can let us develop a sense of great worth inside us. We are created for something great…as great as the service to please the Maker, the Creator Allah.

And these ayahs from Surah Ad Dhariyaat say so much about the need to ponder on the various signs of the Creator around us and within ourselves:

And in the earth are signs for those who are convinced.

And in your own selves. Do you not then perceive?

(Al Qur’an; Chapter 51: Verse 20-21)
